A trial date is expected to be set on Thursday in a controversial animal cruelty case involving Bastrop pastor Rick Bartlett.

Bartlett was charged with animal cruelty last year after a neighbor’s cat named Moody was found dead on the bank of the Colorado River directly underneath the Hwy 150 bridge in Bastrop.

Did Moody jump off the bridge or was he thrown off the bridge?

That’s not known, but what is known is that Bartlett was the last person seen in possession of Moody.

Bartlett trapped Moody on his property on January 15, 2012. He placed Moody in a cage in the back of his pickup truck. Bartlett later admitted that he left Moody trapped in the cage for two days without any food or water.

On January 17 Bartlett drove the caged cat to the Bastrop County Animal Control office and met with Officer Susan Keys.

Bartlett told Keys that he often trapped cats in his yard that he considered feral and brought them to Animal Control.

But Moody wasn’t a feral cat. Officer Keys noticed Moody’s collar and name tag and she told Bartlett to return the cat to the Bell family, Moody’s owner (and Bartlett’s neighbor).

According to Bastrop Police Detective Sarah Moore, Bartlett told the officer “he would just go home and release the cat in the neighborhood.”

Later that evening Keys was told about a dead cat that was found underneath the Hwy 150 bridge.

A veterinarian later told investigators, “Moody’s injuries were caused from a compressive force caused from falling from a high level.”

When investigators caught up with Bartlett, he stated that Moody had escaped from the cage and he didn’t know what had happened to him.

Bartlett later confessed that he was “extremely stressed and angry because of personal issues” and he “untied the bungee chord the cage was attached to and opened the door to the cage and drove off with the intentions of the cat jumping out of the vehicle while he was driving off.”

Bartlett believes he is innocent and will stand trial for animal cruelty. He didn’t respond to an email and phone call from me asking for his side of the story.

Bartlett is the former pastor for the Bastrop Christian Church. He was cut lose from the church after his arrest and has now reportedly set up a new church out of his home.

The pastor has more than just a criminal trial to worry about. Moody’s owners Sarah and Eddie Bell are suing Bartlett.

Moody fell 50-feet off the Highway 150 bridge.

“We are moving forward with our claim that Bartlett is responsible, through malice or gross negligence, for Moody’s death,” said the Bell’s attorney Bill Aleshire.

“The courts (civil and criminal) will never provide healing for the Bell family. Only if Mr. Bartlett openly and honestly explained what happened, showed sincere remorse, and took appropriate responsibility for his actions could the healing process occur.”

Moody’s death made national headlines last year and it was one of the more heavily commented stories for The Digital Texan. People don’t tend to get as worked up about the murder of innocent human beings as they do for the deaths of house pets.

Sarah and Eddie Bell launched on online petition titled “Justice for Moody.” The petition has gathered 6,650 signatures at last count.

The Bell family and their supporters want Pastor Bartlett to serve hard time for the crime. But the reality is that if convicted, Bartlett won’t looking at a stint at Huntsville.

Many in the community have emailed The Digital Texan asking why justice hasn’t been served a year after the alleged crime. Bastrop County District Attorney Bryan Goertz says that “the wheels of justice turn slowly.”

“This is typical for a case like this and animal cruelty cases aren’t given a priority over other cases,” said Goertz.

     Why the needless editorializing?

And he’s a Pastor? Maybe we ought to throw him off a bridge?

This man is not a man of God. God calls upon us to show kindness to all his creatures~ human and animal alike! This person is a monster who deserves to serve time in jail. I hope the family is awarded all his worldly possessions. And, the judge needs to remind him that the loss of “things” cannot even begin to compare with the loss of a beloved family member (which our pets are). I hope the DA is not dragging this on and acts more quickly to bring this man to trial.  Animal lovers will be watching to see that Bartlett is held accountable for his actions…DC

Obviously, you’re not paying attention.  They most certainly do get emotional about the cruelty/murder of children.  Their compassion is not limited to just human beings.

Read the article. The sentence I quoted is in there. I disagree with the sentence entirely and think that it represents unrelated editorializing on the part of the reporter.

It’s proven that animal cruelty is a precursor to other heinous crimes. Why don’t they get this POS off the streets and into a program for felons with anger issues. This guy is a time bomb. Next time it could be your family member.

This is a horrible crime and it makes me cringe to think that a man who proclaims to be a man of God would do such a thing. He obviously has no respect for god’s creatures or he would not have been able senselessly end the life of an animal. Why did the officer allow this man to take the  cat to be “released to the neighborhood”?When Animal Control found the tag that showed the owners name, would it have not been better to call the owner and have them pick up the cat rather than give him possession of a pet that was not his?

  • Connie Barnhart

People get worked up about animals because they cannot protect themselves the way humans can. They are innocent and need our protection. I get just upset when cowardly people try to young children and the elderly. We have to protect those who cannot or can no longer protect themselves.

No excuse, he knows right from wrong, he had no business touching the cat in the first place.

Very good point about Animal Control letting him take Moody, they never should have done that!

  • maxiemom

Especially since it was obvious he had no regard for the cat and simply wanted to rid the neighborhood of him.

I wonder how many of his neighbors’ cats have been killed by this scumbag?

Rick and Tina Bartlett, your trial is coming.  See you in court. I will be sporting a button that has Moody’s photo on it.  You can’t miss me.

  • RickBartlettNeededToVent

Rick and Tina Bartlett, your trial is upcoming on May 9th and May 13th.  See you in court with alot of animal lovers packing the courtroom. We love this picture of you two sporting red shirts; it matches your rednecks. This photo dates back to 2008 when you were first made a pastor at Bastrop Christian Church.  I bet you wish you could turn back the clock and mend your evil ways and still be minister at that prominent church instead of your home based church at 609 Jessica Place called Riverside Christian Church that meets every Sunday at 10:00 AM in Bastrop, TX, just a few blocks from your home on Katy B. Ln. Your new church phone number: (512) 718-0190.
I hope that justice is served and you both serve not just 40 days in jail, but 40 years.  May honor and financial justice be given to the owners of Moody and may they win in everyway possible. Rest in peace, Moody.  You were absolutely adorable and we will never forget you and we will never forget or forgive what these two ”Christian Pastors” Rick and Tina Bartlett did to you. NEVER, will we forget!!!!  Rick Bartlett, you have some serious anger and smugness issues and if convicted, you should see a psychiatrist at once.  Your needing to “VENT” was inexcusable and we are not buying it for one minute that you “forgot” that Moody was in your pick-up truck for three days unattended.  Someone should leave you in a small cage outside for three days before your upcoming trial, without food, water or warmth from the elements.  See how you like it and we can put your wife in a separate cage so that she experiences the terror and torture that Moody went through, as well.  You are both the lowest form of human Christianity one has ever encountered and I would prefer it if you were just thrown off a bridge but I want to see that Moody’s owners are compensated financially first and foremost, then someone else can deal with pushing the Bartlett’s off a 50-foot bridge.  “Have at it” citizens of Bastrop, TX.  I know you want to see them publically humilated and receive the same treatment that poor, defenseless Moody endured.

  • RickBartlettNeededToVent

I think it is a sucker’s bet this is not the first time Rick Bartlett has tortured and murdered a cat by his own hands but it is the first time he has been caught. He use to trap feral cats and take them to the Pound, and you know what happens to unlucky cats at the Pound if they are not adopted. Rick and Tina Bartlett are a couple that this earth could do without.  Rick was so protective of his precious yard that he had to trap cats. What is so special about his yard?  Everyone has a yard and we all clean it up, no matter what is on it.  It takes about three minutes to clean it up. Rick Bartlett has some mental and anger problems and I pity his entire family and congregation, (if he still has one.)

Serial killers generally operate by harming animals. They may want to take a serious look and see if there is any other animal or human being thrown off of a bridge.
