APD: “At this time, investigators do not know the reason why the property owner shot the fleeing victim.”
Austin police have charged Avery Ranch homeowner Fred Yazdi with murder for shooting and killing a man who crashed his car near Yazdi’s home early Friday morning.
The victim is 23-year-old Enrique Recio. According to Austin police, Recio lost control of car and smashed into a retaining wall on Avery Ranch Boulevard at 3 a.m.
Yazdi allegedly came out of his nearby home with a gun and confronted Recio and then shot him to death with a 40-caliber semi-automatic Beretta.
According to police, Yazdi’s wife heard noises and looked outside and saw a man under her car in the driveway. She woke her husband. Yazdi reportedly told investigators that he then confronted Recio outside and said, “If you flee, I’m going to shoot you.”
Recio ran and Yazdi opened fire. His body was found by police on the sidewalk 100-feet from Yazdi’s home.
Recio’s family told KVUE that he had car problems, and had “called a friend to come get him.” By the time the friend got there, Recio was dead.
Yazdi ‘s neighbor told KVUE, “He felt like that was his property, and he had to protect his property,” said Liz Hudson, who used to live next door to the family. “He said he wouldn’t hesitate (to shoot) if anybody was on his property.”
