Bastrop pastor Rick Bartlett suspected of killing neighbor’s cat

moody cat Bastrop pastor Rick Bartlett suspected of killing neighbors cat

12-year-old Moody died from internal injuries after he was thrown off of a bridge and fell 50-feet.

BASTROP COUNTY, TEXAS – Bastrop Christian Church Pastor Rick Bartlett was arrested Friday for allegedly throwing his neighbor’s cat off a bridge where it fell 50-feet.

Rev. Bartlett was charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals after a severely injured cat was found on the Riverwalk near the Loop 150 bridge in Bastrop and later died.

The Bell family was devastated after they received a call from the city informing them that Moody, their 12-year-old cat had been killed.

“Moody suffered at the hands of this man, Rick Bartlett. Moody was such a sweet boy, and when I think about how he died and how scared he must have been to have this strange man hurting him, it breaks my heart,” said Moody’s owner Sara Bell.

Bartlett reportedly told police that he had captured the cat last Sunday in a trap on his property and then forgot about it until Tuesday. That’s when he brought it to the police department.

Investigators say the cat had ID tags and that Bartlett volunteered to return it to the Bell’s. But Bartlett never returned the cat.

According to Bastrop police, Bartlett has told them somewhat conflicting stories. He claims he went back to his truck near the Bastrop Christian Church and that the cat was gone. He later said he opened the cage an drove off, hoping that the cat would jump out.

But Bartlett’s story began to unravel after a resident found the badly injured cat on the Riverwalk and called Bastrop County Animal Control. An officer recognized the cat as the same one that Bartlett had brought into his office earlier in the day.

“This man (Bartlett ) lives just three houses down from me, on my same street. If he would have just told us Moody was bothering him, even one time, we would have gladly done something about it. Rick Bartlett, he calls himself a man of God?” Bell said.

A veterinarian determined that Moody suffered lung damage from blunt force trauma and that his injuries were not consistent with with being hit by a car.

The Bell’s are pointing the finger at the pastor.

“The wreckage Rick Barlett has caused in our lives in tremendous. My 5-year-old daughter was inconsolable, crying hysterically while clutching Moody’s collar. Screaming ‘I want Moody back, why, why, why.’ How do I explain to my young child that cruelty like this exists in this world? She is too young to know the evil ways of men like this,” Bell said.

Man of God – really?! What kind of person would do such a thing? I hope the “man” has to go to jail, pay a huge fine, and I hope he losing his job! He should NEVER be telling anyone else how to behave, since he obviously chooses not to obey God or our society’s rules/laws. We are suppose to be good steward’s of God’s creatures.

  • Luvs Cats

Lock him up for a few days and forget about him and see how the pastor likes that. Bail is too nice for a piece of ____ person like this. Love thy neighbor, just not their cat, huh? He should lose his job – he has no business being a pastor.

  • HolierThanThou

What’s most sad about this is that this sort of behavior is so typical of “conservative” Christians — there is no love, no compassion, and no understanding in their treatment of others (human or otherwise).  Conservatives preach hatred and intolerance as the central tenets of their faith, doing everything in their power to prevent people with different beliefs from being able to enjoy the same fundamental rights and privileges that they do.

If compassion cannot be shown for an animal, it certainly cannot be shown for a person.
“Verily I say unto you, Since you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.”

Even if he did do this, why is this any different than what all TNR (trap, neuter, release) advocates do? They take cats from shelters and wherever they can find them then release them out into nature to fend for themselves. I see absolutely NO difference between what this guy did (if he even did it), having this cat also “die of attrition”, and what every last TNR advocate has done for the last many decades. How come *ALL* TNR people aren’t also being blamed for the cruel and heinous ways that ALL their cats die? Just because TNR advocates didn’t see them slowly suffer to death that means they didn’t suffer?

Look up the term TNR advocates just LOVE to use on how they reduce their feral-cat numbers, their candy-coating feel-good term of “Death by Attrition”. This means that their cats will die from disease, cat-attacks, animal-attacks, exposure to the elements, being road-kill, starvation, being poisoned by anything that cat finds, and any other means that drastically shortens the life of those cats. ALL their cats suffering for how many days, months, or years it takes to die that way. In many parts of this country and the world this clearly falls under the guidelines for cruelty to animals, animal-abuse, animal-endangerment, and animal-abandonment laws.

The “act of cruelty” lies squarely on the shoulders of whomever let that invasive-species pet roam free. Are you going to blame the automobile in the freeway for hitting a cat that you let play in the freeway? Are you going to blame the neighbor’s dog in their own yard that your cat jumped the fence to annoy it and your cat ended up dead? Are you THAT criminally irresponsible? Besides, what difference does it make if the cat gets shot or ran over by a car or attacked by another animal or poisoned by antifreeze found in a gutter or poisoned with rat-poison? The result is the same. The cause is the VERY same — the fault of the criminally irresponsible pet-owners that let an invasive-species pet roam free. It only means they really didn’t care about that cat at all in the first place or they would have protected it from all harm like any sane pet-owner does.

NO MATTER HOW A ROAMING CAT DIES IT IS 100% THE FAULT OF WHOMEVER LET IT ROAM FREE. Make NO mistake about that.

And let’s not forget how TNR advocates think absolutely NOTHING about carving up any cat they see with scalpels for neutering and spaying them, as well as cutting off parts of their ears, from which they have to heal-up for weeks before they are well enough to try to survive again. As if letting them die of “attrition” wasn’t bad enough, TNR-advocates start them off by terrorizing them with traps, cages, and sticking knives into them first. Which is precisely why they can’t trap them a 2nd time to keep them vaccinated.

Quite the double-standard going on here.

If you want to raise revenue for your towns and cities in order to deal with this invasive-species ecological-disaster properly, start charging all these TNR advocates with severe fines and imprisonment for CRUELTY TO ANIMALS and violating every invasive-species law on earth. Not only are they cruelly torturing cats, but also all the NATIVE wildlife that they inflict their cats upon.

They’re not doing this out of any goodness of their hearts. THEY DON’T HAVE HEARTS, nor minds. Proved, 100%.

  • Rick S.

You have an obvious hatred and intolerance of Christians, while claiming to be tolerant. Typical liberal hypocrisy.

Animals abusers come from all different walks of life. “Tolerant” liberals like you abuse animals too.

Religion has nothing to do with this. Plus, the man has not been convicted. But you have convicted him. That’s really tolerant of you.

Who’s holier than thou? it sounds like you.

  • Perrymj68

Guess what, some people eat cats. I guess they should be locked up. Bail? Really? Get over it. Cats are a huge nuisance and you cat lovers let them run where ever they please. Leash laws apply to cats as well as dogs.

  • Sarahbell

We are the owners of Moody, our sweet 12 year old boy. He was a rescue cat, that we had for 10 years, up to date on vaccinations, neutered, with a collar and tags. He was loved by our neighbors and especially all the children on our street who enjoyed petting him. He was an inside cat, but we let him out on occasion, he loved to bask in the sun.Rick Bartlett, he calls himself a man of God!!! A wolf in Sheep’s clothing is more like it! The Bible actually has much to say in regard to animal abuse. In the beginning, God created the earth and all the creatures on it to be under the authority of humanity. He entrusted these beautiful elements of His creation to our care (Genesis 1:26) God expects the Christian, above all others, to be sensitive to all of His creation, knowing that exploiting or abusing it shows a disrespect for God Himself. Abuse of anything that God made is not the character of God, but rather of the Evil One.I want to tell more of our story, Moody’s story. Rick Bartlett admits to capturing our Moody on Sunday the 15th. He admits to “forgetting about the cat” for 3 days. Our sweet Moody was left in a trap with no food or water, scared, hungry, and confused FOR 3 DAYS!When he finally remembered he had Moody, he proceeded to take him to animal control (Susan Keys) and he asked her to take the cat away. She looked at Moody and told Rick she was going to take him back home, because he was a pet with a collar showing his address and phone number. When he found out she was going to take Moody back home, he told her nevermind, that he would do it himself. She allowed him to take the cat himself, because she thought he was someone she could trust. Susan Keys regrets that decision ore than anyone can know! After he left Susan Keys he admits that he left Moody in the back of his truck, in a trap, and drove to the bank and to his church. After leaving the church, he then admits he let the cat free from the cage, into the bed of the truck, then drove away (with my cat loose in the open bed of the truck!) saying he “hoped he would just jump out while he was driving”.The doctors have told us his injuries were consistent with being thrown from the bridge. He did not take my beloved cat back home like he promised, we don’t believe he never had that intention! My sweet Moody was found dying at the bottom of the bridge that runs over Fisherman’s Park, miles away from my neighborhood in Riverside Grove!Moody was taken to the Veterinarian after he was found barely alive under the bridge. He suffered for hours under that bridge, in unspeakable pain. He had collapsed lungs, was struggling to breathe. The pads of his paws were torn from his feet! When Moody saw me he couldn’t sit up but he tried to, he was crying out for me, he wanted his mommy to make it better and I couldn’t! He died a few hours later. My poor Moody suffered at the hands of this man, Rick Bartlett. Moody was such a sweet boy, and when I think about how he died and how scared he must have been to have this strange man hurting him, it breaks my heart! This man lives just three houses down from me, on my same street. If he would have just told us Moody was bothering him, even one time, we would have gladly done something about it. We were never given the chance! Why couldn’t he just give us that chance!?The wreckage Rick Barlett has caused in our lives in tremendous. My 5 year old daughter was inconsolable, crying hysterically while clutching Moody’s collar. Screaming “I want Moody back, why, why, why!” How do I explain to my young child that cruelty like this exists in this world, she is too young to know the evil ways of men like this!I tried to comfort her by telling her Moody is in Heaven now. However, she knows a pastor committed this crime and she has lost all faith. My 5 years old response to me “heaven doesn’t exist, Moody is just dead”.I would appreciate anyone please spreading the word about this man, he must not get away with this. I want everyone in Bastrop to know what he has done! The church needs to get a pastor who is really a man of God, not this man, not Rick Bartlett.Proverbs 12:10 “A righteous man has regard for the life of his animal, But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.”

    Rest In Peace, Moody-

There are many of us that will not forget your story. We hope that man is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and no matter what happens in the court system nothing can change that what goes around comes around.

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Jerk!

  • jc

    We won’t forget.  What a horrible person…

  • jc

What an idiotic rant!  What does this incident have to do with TNR?  This horrible, self-proclaimed “man of God” trapped, tortured, and caused the death of his neighbor’s pet.  It wasn’t a stray.  He knew it was a pet and who it belonged to so why didn’t he let animal control take the cat?  I hope they throw the book at him!   And I hope the members of his church take action as well.

  • jc

Religion has everything to do with this.  The guy is a pastor, for God’s sake!

  • dj

u r a stupid redneck. if you knew anything abt biology, you’d realize there’s a difference between domesticated animals and animals u punks hunt in the wild. yes, quite the double standard. if the only crime u committed was shitting in a neighbors garden earned you a beating ending in ur death, then so be it. u both should go to jail and be b-effed til u bleed from your nose. as an educator in a prison system, inmates may commit horrendous crimes against their equals, but if you commit a crime against a trusting child, animal, or elderly person, then you deserve their violence. per the law, cats are exempt from the ” roam free law “. this so called pastor preacher should, in the name of god, put a gun in his mouth and pull the trigger before someone else does it for him. shame on him .  and what ” native  wildlife ” are you talking about that these cats are inflicting their GOD GIVEN instincts on ? deer ?  boar ” or  perhaps just rats and mice that are invading the man of god’s garden…. man of god my patootie . and cats are not invasive species…been around forever, domesticated by man to work ( mousers , companionship ). your logic, if we want to stretch your statements that far to call it logic, is skewed, at best, and stupid at least. it does not matter : the fact is that the dumbo pastor murdered a helpless, trusting animal and then, as god is his witness, lied about it. jesus christ, judge you both,  better yet, put the gun in your mouth too. stupid .

  • Djwatts

you evidenty don’t know the difference per the law. cats are not treated equally under the law because they are not dogs : they are more difficult to keep tabs on. it doesnt matter what the law says : killing a domesticated animal by a purported man of god or anyone else is WRONG WRONG WRONG. he should be prosecuted , sent to jail and b-effed til he bleeds from his nose. so should you, idiot.

  • Djwatts

my deepest sympathies for your baby, moody. he will rest in peace in jesus’s arms. it does not change what this idiot ” man of god moron ” has done.  he is a fake; probably just got the job so he didn’t have to work . anybody can preach but to be a true chrisitan is hard. it takes work and self evaluation. i honestly hope he goes to jail and the people who are there, who don’t particularly like crimes against the defenseless, take him to new heights of cruelty and unfairness. with love and affection, djw

  • Djwatts

” christians ” didn’t kill the cat . a despicable , so- called man of god did.  and why should anyone be tolerant of ( especially of a man of god who should love and respect ALL OF GODS CREATURES ) who kills a trusting, domesticated animal ? I don’t hate ” christians “, not ” true christians ” ( unlike you ). But i sure don’t respect their blind trust of a mere human who interprets the bible for them.  No, religion has nothing to do with this : but, common decency and a conscience, does. The evidence at hand shows he killed the cat. Your lack of ability to have compassion for the cat and the family who have to live with this because the cat shit in the pastors effing garden shows how tolerant you are. i guess you are not a real christian, are you ? if you claim to be, then perhaps you should find another denomination to interpret the bible for you. better yet, if you think you’re up to it, interpret it yourself….mr tolerant. shame on you. murder is murder. big man, this rick punk. yes i have judged him and i hope , yes, i wish, he suffers at the hands of people who do not tolerate cruelty to the weak.

  • Djwatts

actually, leash laws do not apply to cats. some people do eat cats, but not here. and eating a cat is not the same as beating a cat to death while it’s at it’s murderers mercy and power. cats eat mice and rats and bugs, and yes, crap in people’s gardens; so what: fertilizer. are you really that ignorant ? gee, you should go to jail with preacher rick and get b-effed til you bleed from your nose, too. people like you are a huge pimple on the butt of society, you’re pitiful. feel sorry for your family.

  • KW

I knew that Austin was “weird” and liberal, and that’s fine, but I am very surprised and

disappointed at the rush to judgement on this man, Rick Bartlett.  To read most of these

comments, one might think he was a terrorist or a serial killer.

First, these comments (most) are being made based only on a short media story, not on a

detailed investigation.  Most people are aware (or should be) that these short media

stories are basically just “hearsay” and often contain much significantly wrong and/or

missing information.  In fact, I’ve already heard/read several notably different

versions of this story, indicating to me that there are some discrepancies that need to

be resolved before judging.  Sounds like a lynch mob to me.  I thought we had courts and

    juries for this.
I highly recommend that we temper or hold our judgement until we get the whole story.

Even after reading the comments by the cat’s owners, I wonder if Bartlett’s

“admissions” are words they heard from him, or words the owners heard someone else say

that he said (subject to misquote), though most critical comments appear to be made

BEFORE the owners’ comments were even posted.

Second, Pets can be a real nuisance.  I know;  I’ve had dogs and I have cats.  Dogs

bark, slobber, smell, put dirty feet on clothes and furniture and floors, and leave

their feces all over the place.  Cats yowl in the night, drive away (or eat) songbirds,

claw furniture and doorframes, and drive neighborhood dogs to bark incessantly at all

hours.  Also, cats are an independent lot, and cannot be kept in by fences and do NOT

tolerate leashes for any length of time.
If you have cats, you probably don’t have much use for dogs;  if you have dogs, you

probably feel the same about cats.  We need to work it out;  we should do unto others as

we would HAVE them do to us (I read that some place).

Third, People make mistakes, sometimes bad ones.  Even very good people.  What I hear in

most of these comments is angry, vindictive, hateful judgement, often using the Bible as

a basis.  I ask: Where is the rest of the Bible message: mercy, forgiveness, not

convicting except on the basis of 2 or 3 witnesses?
How many of us have put our own child in time-out and forgotten about it for too

long, or failed to feed our pet a time or 2?  Dare I mention that we have created laws

that call for more penalties for accidentally mistreating a pet than we do for

deliberately killing a pre-born human baby?

Fourth, I have known Rick Bartlett and his family personally for almost 20 years.  I

have worshiped with him, been in his house many times, shared meals with him and his

wife many times, prayed with him, been with him through several very stressful times in

his life.  I have seen how he treats his wife, kids, pets, and other people with love,

    patience, tolerance, kindness, and respect.
Though I do not know all the facts in this saga, and so I am not prepared to proclaim

either his guilt or innocence, what I DO most assuredly believe is that Rick is a good

man, a Godly man, that would not deliberately mistreat a pet – anyone’s pet.  He cares

deeply and works very hard for his church and community.  He was one of the main leaders

of the Ministerial Alliance that helped Bastrop deal with the wildfires last September.

    How soon we forget.

Finally, I would urge all of you who posted hurtful premature comments  to reconsider

them.  I urge you to reconsider how YOU would feel if YOU were an upstanding member of

your community and YOU were accused of something you did not do (or even if you did do

it) and the whole world suddenly treated you like a scumbag before even hearing the

whole story, and you read all these vengeful comments in the paper/web.  Would YOU feel

    fairly and respectfully treated?
I humbly suggest that we re-read John 8:3-11 (just Google it).
Then, consider posting a revised comment.  Maybe even send a short note or email to

him or his church.  Even if you still feel that the person who would deliberately do

this to a pet IS a scumbag, at least let the man know that you appreciate his service to

the Lord and the community, and that you are withholding judgement until you know the

    WHOLE story.

    That only seems fair.

Please give Moody justice and do not let that evil man ever work again as a pastor.

IT’S YOUR FAULT YOUR CAT IS DEAD — NOBODY ELSE’S FAULT.

Perhaps cat-owners should learn the distinction between being a responsible exotic-pet-owner and a criminally irresponsible one. If not, too bad. The rest of the world is not their pet’s baby-sitter. A highly destructive INVASIVE-SPECIES pet at that. That’s THEIR job to keep them from harm lest they be held criminally responsible for animal-abandonment, animal-abuse, animal-endangerment, animal-cruelty, and invasive-species laws.

Let the ex-cat-owner explain to their child why their criminally irresponsible behavior and values got their cat killed by road-kill, poisonous plants animals and chemicals found in its environment, died a slow death from an animal attack, or was trapped and drowned, or shot by someone who is more respectful and responsible about their natural environment than the criminally irresponsible cat-owner themselves. Maybe in that lesson of the immature adult explaining the death of their cat to their child that the parent too will grow up into a socially responsible, respectable, and respectful human as well one day. Though I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that to ever happen. They’re already a lost cause. They clearly proved that by showing how much they truly care about the well-being of their own animals.

Your self-victimization game that you’ve played all your life to manipulate others isn’t going to work anymore. GAME OVER

The person that needs to be fined and convicted of animal-cruelty here is Sarahbell. She clearly doesn’t care about the well being of her cat nor her own child’s feelings. What difference does it make if that cat got ran over by a car, lapped up some anti-freeze in someone’s garage, ate rat-poison someone put under their porch, or it was thrown off a bridge?

THE PERSON AT FAULT FOR THE DEATH OF THAT CAT, NO MATTER HOW IT DIED, IS SARAHBELL.

She plays a pretty self-victimization game to manipulate all of you, and you ALL stupidly fall for it.

    Sarahbell,
There is an internet site called “Causes” where you can make a petition that can be circulated all over the nation for signatures to ensure that this low life is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I have never set one up, but I can find out how to do it if you can’t find it. If you get it set up, let me know and I will post it everywhere. He needs to pay the price for this horrible act of cruelty. I am so sorry for your loss of Moody. I’m glad you found him before he passed – at least he knew he was with you before he died.
Also, in TN, you can sue for the loss of your pet. You might want to see if that is available to you in TX. This was done successfully in our city court when a chihuahua was killed by neighbor’s dogs running loose. Hopefully, this will tag my email if you reply.

The general rule-of-thumb in the USA is that if your land is in an area zoned for agricultural or livestock use or unincorporated then it is perfectly legal to destroy any animal, someone’s pet or not, that is threatening the health, well-being, and safety of your own animals or family (also true even in most densely populated cities). The only animals exempt from you taking immediate action, legally, are those listed on endangered or threatened species lists, and any bird species under protection of MBTA (the Migratory Bird Treaty Act). Even then variances can be given should there be sufficient problem but this requires further study by authorities. Since cats are listed in the top 100 WORST invasive-species of the world in the “Global Invasive Species Database”, this means they have no protection whatsoever from being shot on sight. And in fact, if your area enforces and obeys invasive-species laws — as they should — then it is against the law to NOT destroy any cat on sight, someone’s pet or not. It is your civic and moral responsibility to destroy any invasive-species that is found away from safe confinement and roaming freely in a non-native habitat.

A cat-owner that releases their cat in an area zoned for any form of livestock or agricultural use or unincorporated land has no legal grounds to sue anyone if their cat is shot. Even if the shooter walks up to the door of the ex-cat-owner and hands their dead cat back to them, saying, “I shot your cat, here it is! Better luck next time!” Though local law-enforcement frowns on this because the criminally-irresponsible ex-cat-owner will just raise a stink with law-enforcement, wasting their time when they have more important things to do than explain to and coddle an idiot. Hence the popular “SSS Cat Management Program” (Shoot, Shovel, & Shut-Up) method to save your gendarmes the further hassle by the ex-cat-owning trouble-makers.

In fact, here’s a publication from a study done by the University of Nebraska on the best ways to HUMANELY deal with a feral-cat problem wherever you live. This documentation INCLUDES the best firearms, ammo, and air-rifles required to HUMANELY destroy cats. http://deenawinter.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/ec1781.pdf

Besides, what difference does it make if the cat gets shot or ran over by a car, attacked by another cat or animal, drowned, or poisoned by plants animals or chemicals? The result is the same. The cause is the same — the fault of the criminally irresponsible pet-owner that let that invasive-species pet roam free. It only means they really didn’t care about that cat at all so nobody else should either.

When flying over the USA on a clear day, look down. Then you’ll see that vast coast-to-coast patchwork-quilt of farms and ranches where it’s perfectly legal to destroy every last cat.

You might also like to know …

If you advocate for cats as rodent-control on farms and ranches you’ve already doomed them to being destroyed by drowning or shooting when it becomes a financial liability more than any asset. Ranchers and farmers worldwide are fully aware that cats’ Toxoplasma gondii parasite can cause the very same birth defects (hydrocephaly and microcephaly), still-births, and miscarriages in their livestock and important wildlife as it can in pregnant women. This is why any cats are ROUTINELY destroyed around gestating livestock and wildlife-management areas in the most efficient, humane, and least-expensive method available. Common rural practice everywhere. The risk of financial loss from dead livestock and important native wildlife from an invasive-species cat is far too great to do otherwise.

The next time you bite into that whole-grain veggie-muffin or McBurger, you need to just envision biting down on a shot-dead or drowned kitten or cat. For that’s precisely how that food supply got to your mouth — whether you want to face up to it or not. It’s not going to change reality no matter how much you twist your mind away from the truth of your world.

If you want to blame someone for the drowning and shooting of cats, you need to prosecute yourself — every time you eat.

People who don’t even respect their neighbors by keeping their destructive, disease-spreading, wildlife destroying, invasive-species cats off of everyone else’s property have CLEARLY shown that they already have ZERO respect for anyone and anything else in this world. They have ZERO respect for human lives, ZERO respect for animals’ lives, even ZERO respect for their own cat’s life. THEREFORE, they deserve ZERO respect in return. It’s THAT simple.

This report gives more details, saying this creep also kept the cat, Moody, in his pickup truck for 3 days without water or food before killing him by throwing him off a bridge and/or beating him close to death, we need to send our voice to the Judge in this case and tell him to punish this creepy “man of God” to the fullest.
I am sickened by this man’s cruel, heartless actions towards a pet cat that had a collar and ID, the mistake was that the animal control officer TRUSTED this creep because Bartlett said he would return the cat to his neighbors home…It’s animal controls job to make sure these cats or other animals are returned! Please learn from this animal control…

If Pastor Rick Bartlett is any reflection on the congregation of this church, one should stay as far away as possible. This man has not only proven that he cares little about anybody besides himself, insofar has he killed a 5 year old girls cat because it “annoyed” him. Does this sound like a man of G_ _? or is he a wolf in sheep’s clothing? To me, he sounds like one of the antichrists that the Bible warns us about. One can only hope that his congregation will get wise to the Devil in their midst and cast him out!

  • http://www.facebook.com/PaulMBennett42 Paul M. Bennett

You’re right that nobody should rush to condemn him entirely…yet. But a lot of people have clearly said “IF he really did this” or words to that effect, instead of assuming his guilt. Some facts are clear: he trapped the cat, he left it in the cage for days, he took it to the police, and he told them he’d return it to the family. He CAPTURED their cat, neglected it, and then failed to return it as promised–those are the facts as he admitted them to the police, as they happened, no question. Even if he somehow did not kill the cat, he still was RESPONSIBLE for its well being until it was returned to the family.

Perhaps YOU should wait for all the facts before defending this oh-so-holy “man of God” who you know so well. Also, notice that you’re the one with bias here–you are friendly with the pastor and are of his faith, even worshiped with him. The rest of us are speaking as citizens, not as buddies of one side of this issue. So, your rush to defense and your bias make your entire comment a bit of a joke.

Also, why would we thank this man for serving the Lord when it looks like he killed a kid’s cat out of annoyance? If your Lord condones that, then you follow a God who has no connection to Jesus Christ.

His congregation and sycophants like you can support him. Here’s my suggestion: If you’re really a person of God, how about suggesting that we write letters to the LITTLE GIRL whose cat is dead?

You want us to support the man who captured her cat, leading to its death.
I’d rather support the innocent child.

Sounds like YOU are the one who needs to Google some Bible passages, and get your priorities straight. WWJD? He’d be comforting the child, not defending the man.

“But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” Matthew 18:6
In this passage, Jesus was talking about children. If anyone did anything that caused a child to doubt Him or to fall into darkness, it would be better for that person to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
This pastor is not a man of God…and he will get what he deserves for causing your daughter to not believe.

he will pretend to be sorry, ask for God’s forgiveness, and his congregation will turn a blind eye to what he has done. Can’t punish a pastor, can we? He is one of the “chosen ones.” Who are we to judge him?

It’s a sorry belief system, and it allows some very disturbed people to commit evil acts and get away with them. This pastor, and others like him, should be punished twice — once here on earth and again in heaven.

Godly people shouldn’t kill other people’s pets. Read this article again, and list all the facts on a piece of paper. Pastor knew where that cat lived. He chose not to return Moody to his family. Pastor does not deserve your support.

So sorry for the family of Moody. I cried while reading this horrific story. My heart aches for you all. What a horrible crime to commit against this innocent animal. The little girls pain for the loss off her pet should haunt him for a lifetime as it will her. This so called man of God should be investigated for other crimes. Anyone who would torture an animal so brutally probably has past abuses against animals and humans that have yet to be discovered. You don’t just out of the blue do something so violent to a living being. He knew the cat had a home and yet he did this cruel heartless act. Search his closet well there are other abuses I’m sure.
    R.I.P. Moody.

This has nothing to do with the invasive nature of cats in the local eco system, this is about some d-bag who knowingly killed his neighboor’s pet. This along with the irony of the d-bag being a suppoased “man of god” is why it is (somewhat) newsworthy. Yes, some are quick to judge this man while only hearing the limited detail of this news item, however, I assume that if it came out that this story was reported inaccurately most would retract their harsh judgements. I don’t care whether or not you like cats, dogs or hermit crabs– if you kill my pet I will kick your ass.

I am a Christian and if Pastor Rick Bartlett of Bastrop Texas actually trapped, tortured and killed his neighbor’s cat he deserves to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. He does not deserve to be a sheperd of a flock. He needs to repent and receive deliverance. We are called as Christians to forgive him and pray for him. We are called to make excuses for evil no matter where we find it. Let everything that is darkness brought into the light!
Christians need to stop making excuses and hiding what is going on in the church. God says judgment will begin in his house first. We are supposed to be winning the lost and dying world by the love we are showing to one another.
    Yeshua (Jesus) himself said
“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out demons? and in thy name done many wonderul works?
“And then will I profess unto them. I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Ref Mt 7 v22-23)
By our love the Bible says the world will know that we are followers of Yeshua (Jesus)

Nevermind the “alleged” parts of the story, then, let’s focus on the facts.

He admitted to trapping the cat, throwing it in his truck, and depriving it of food and water for three days. Three DAYS. Not a three hours. Three entire days. That alone constitutes animal cruelty, and that alone he freely admitted to. I could possibly understand trapping a cat, putting it in the truck and then having to go do something and not getting the cat to the local animal control for an hour or so. But no normal and sane person forgets about a living creature sitting in a cage in their vehicle for three days.

Then, when he finally got around to taking the cat into animal control, the officers there immediately notice that the animal has tags with owner information clearly written. He then, in an outright lie, tells animal control he’ll take the cat back to the owners himself, which he admits he did not do.

This man deserves no respect. He does not get to be spared from facing the consequences of what he freely admits he has done. The fact that he’s supposedly a religious man has nothing to do with it. He is an admitted animal abuser and should be treated as such.

  • Anonymous

So, are you telling me you think that what this man did to this animal is okay because the owners failed to keep the cat on their own property?

I’m pretty sure leash laws (IF the community does, in fact, have such laws–not all places do, and it is usually something defined in municipal code, especially in the case of cats), do not condone neglect and abuse of animals found running at large. Typically you get a ticket or have to pay a fine.

And this cat lover keeps all her cats safely indoors to protect them from terrible people like this pastor and, evidently, you.

Never mind, Jesus will forgive the preacher. But the little girl won’t.

Let me amend the comment I made earlier. “This pastor, and others like him, should be punished twice — once here on earth and again in heaven.”

He should be punished here on earth, then denied heaven. He doesn’t deserve to be forgiven.

Perhaps reading 1 corinthians and what it has to say about love, would give you a different frame of reference. I am a christian and I strive to be honest, love others and treat people with kindness. I love cats, and animal. I have probably more compassion inside than is good for me! I live in LaGrange, but I drive to Austin every four days to fill feeders and care for a colony of feral cats. I know many people who claim christianity, but don’t live it. Please don’t compare everyone, to the obviously negative experience you’ve had with some. PS look up Joyce Myers and Joel Osteen. I like your quote from the bible and that you cared enough to comment.

  • Anonymous

Your view is as sick as the preacher that killed that cat. Cats are gentle, clean, sensitive, loving animals. I’d say your shallow, cruel, ignorant viewpoint is the reason you would even stoop so low as to write a comment like that. Animals of all kinds are eaten in other cultures, that doesn’t make it right.

Politics has nothing to do with this; cruelty, abuse, torture, and hate towards a (childs) cat, to the point of condemning this innocent animal to a horrible, slow and painful death, is something akin to blatant EVIL behavior… THAT is the issue.

My heart is absolutely bleeding for you. I have six cats and they are my family too. I am amember of the Bastrop Cat Coalition. We are absolutely enraged over this “mans” cruelty, and are considering a public response to what he has done. Has anyone notified his church’s head office and reported what he has done? has the ASCPA been contacted? Please tell your daughter that God doesn’t make bad things happen, He makes it better when they do, and he punishes the wicked people in this world that cause bad things like this to happen. Please find it in your heart to rescue another cat, there are so many in need. And find a way to heal. Whan I lose someone I love as much as you loved Moody, I plant a tree or perennial flower, as a living reminder of what I loved in their memory. I hope you can find solace. I am truly sorry that you all have suffered at this person hands. Words like deceit, liar, thief, sick, cruel, heartless, selfish, and cold only begin to summarize this individual. I hope his church and his higher up’s ask him to leave that church and ministry all together: he doesn’t belong in one with his kind of a viewpoint. I wish I could take this horrible thing away and give you back your Moody. He knows you loved him and you were there for him, thats what really matters in the end.

SweetAnnie, Please Don’t be” jaded” by this forgive and forget way of thinking that you’re referring to… ACT!!! A true christian forgives, yes; but it doesn’t make this pastor above the law, just because he’s forgiven. I wonder how many people in his congregation have cats?!!! They are probably just as outraged and many will probably leave his church -who would want to follow him after this? I would imagine his congregation is ashamed of him.
Join others in not letting this rest until justice for this family and their beloved pet has prevailed. Anyone can go to church, it doesn’t make them a christian, or pastor, or even a true man of God. Annie it takes someone who truly loves and cares enough to make a stand, so ACT:)

This article has me in tears in sympathy with the Bells.  This pastor, who called himself a Christian, preaching such in his ‘church’, is a DISGRACE to his church AND to Christianity.  If this is how pastors act outside of their churches, hiding behind their religion, I would NEVER step inside a Christian church again  Churches, like that of this beast, may have many in their congregation (scarey that children could hear him), but the absentee was Jesus, who was NOT there.

  • jill786

Despicable act by a despicable man who has the nerve to refer to himself as a Man of God.   So typical of the ignorant  hypocrits that have “Churches” here in the south:  they preach to others about the ”speck” in their eyes, while ignoring the” beam”in their own. I hope he loses everything.

My neighbors, who love telling everyone they are “Christians”, did the same to my family. They took my baby girl’s kitty just as this man. I suspect my neighbor like this man killed my cat as she too had a collar and was micro chipped.

I pray every day for this man to discover the true compassion of Jesus Christ. This “minster” and my neighbor are unable to show compassion for not only God’s creatures but the families who so loved these pets. They have both wronged God by committing such atrocities against their neighbors.

The only thing more visceral to harming pets is children. In this case both have been harmed. I can’t imagine a man enjoying killing a creature who views humans as a source of love and food. I know my poor Cupcake had never met an unkind person until she was taken from life. I wonder what she was thinking as she was driven off in a cage in an open truck by a stranger. I wonder if she suffered and cried as he killed her. I hope she did not suffer as much as the cat in this article.

My children know there is true evil in the world. They have seen it first hand. They live next door to it. My heart goes out to this family as I too have been the recipient to such cruelty.

Our tolerance and understanding of others is so low these days. The need for instant satisfaction and gratification of the self is number one. There is no consideration of other’s feelings or needs. There is no talking things out. There is no understanding.

Like this family I will never know why my kids had to be punished as my neighbor has never said one word to me. Yet the cat trap still sits today. Right outside my fence. Even though I have no cats it is there to remind me of my loss.

Even though, I refuse commit the same sin of hating my neighbor in kind. Instead I pray for him, his wife, and especially his children. Forgive them Father for they know what they do.

Christians are not defined by a name but by their actions. This man and my neighbor has yet to show they know anything about Christ. I only pray they do before it is too late.

I will do everything in my power by spreading the word about this story so that Moody is not forgotten. Facebook, Twitter, email, word of mouth, etc. I feel sorry for Rick Bartlett’s wife! What a social stigma he has now and if I were her I would file for a quickie divorce and take their pet dog with her. She should run for the hills. God bless Moody’s family. That have shown extreme bravery and dignity by mainly dealing with the police, the vet and now the court system. They could have taken matters into their own hands and done to Rick Bartlett what he did to Moody. They could have made “Brother Rick Bartlett” walk a fifty foot bridge laden with banana peels.

Pastor Rick Bartlett who was also a volunteer police chaplain threw Moody, a sweet, defenseless 12-year old neighborhood ID collared cat off of HWY 150 Bridge to it’s death. All because he was worried about his pretty little yard; yet he owns a dog himself! We all own yards and lots of critters walk through them. Let’s not get our 3XL panties in a bunch over it, Pastor! Please contact Bastrop, TX District Attorney Bryan Goertz or Judge Paul Pape to bring justice to the family of Moody and prevent Rick Bartlett from committing another heinous crime. A senseless act that has brought out national outrage.

  • JusticeForMoody

Sarah, believe me, I am spreading the word. I have contacted every animal abuse society on the Internet. I have posted this story, and the Bartlett photos all over the Internet, signed the petiton. I have done everything but publish his home address, which I do know to be on Katy B Lane Road, His address came up when I looked up his criminal arrest record. I won’t go that far because I don’t want to endanger you but we all know what Rick’s temporary new chuch address is. His church is held in a home not far from his own home. Riverside Christian Church on 609 Jessica Place, Bastrop, TX.
The new church phone number: (512) 718-0190.
I wonder how many people attend his new church? If they do, after reading this story of yours, his church must be a cult. What I can’t understand is his wife, Tina Bartlett. How could a woman allow this sort of thing to happen to a sweet cat? If my boyfriend, husband, or partner ever did what Rick Bartlett did, I would leave him the second I heard of that happening. It would tell me he is a liar, a psycopath, and a potential serial killer. I bet he abuses her also and probably abused his many children. Another thing that puzzles me. I saw you and your husband on TV when the story first came out. Rick Bartlett looks like he weighs 300 lbs. plus some change. However, your husband sure doesn’t look like someone built like Barney Fife from the “Andy Griffith Show.” If it had been me, and I was your husband, who looks pretty darn strong, I would have rearranged Rick Bartlett from head to toe and Rick would still be in the hospital or a nursing home after I had got ahold of him. I hope that your trial date comes up soon and that Rick Bartlett is given the maximum sentence of four thousand dollars and one year in jail. To me, that is a pitiful sentence. He deserves the electric chair or to be pushed off of HWY 150 Bridge by a couple of big “good ol’ boys.”

  • JusticeForMoody

Perrymj68, you are an uneducated idiot who has probably never owned a cat, bird, dog or even a hamster. Stay single and please don’t reproduce. We don’t need any little Perrymj68′s running around in this world. That would be as bad as having another Pastor Rick Bartlett in this world.

  • JusticeForMoody

You know the sad thing about this story is if you read Sarah Bell’s heart wrenching account of seeing Moody’s near lifeless body at Crossroad’s Vet Clinic after Pastor (snake-oil-salesman) Rick Bartlett threw Moody over the HWY 150 Bridge. It made me cry to read what Moody went through. At the pet clinic, Sarah and Eddy were notified that Moody was found at the bottom of the bridge. They rushed down to the Crossroad’s Vet Clinic. Moody struggled and tried to sit up so that Sarah could comfort him and make him better. Moody died a few hours later. After he threw Moody off the bridge, Pastor Rick Bartlett probably slept like a baby and didn’t miss a meal that day. He was most likely attending a big church pot luck social and snacked on Dorritos before he went to bed. He hasn’t missed a meal since.

And yet you read the recent heart wrenching story of the female vet named Dr. Edie Klein in Georgia who gave her six disabled pets lethal injections before using the same drug to kill herself on the same day before 8:30 AM. Police suspect financial problems may be behind her suicide. Dr. Edie Klein’s last few hours as she was collecting her animals and preparing herself for her final journey is the exact opposite of Pastor Rick Bartlett’s heinous crime. Dr. Edie Klein did this out of depression and love for her animals, whom she knew no one would have adopted and she did not want them ending up at an animal shelter. Police suspect she did this act of because of competition from local vets that caused her business to go south. Dr.Edie Klein’s final day and hours were absolutely heartbreaking and I wish I could have done something to have stopped her, as this was a temporary situation that could have been restored with a little time, more business, a silent partner or a benefactor stepping in.

Pastor Rick Bartlett’s case is the opposite. He committed this crime out of malice and because he has no conscious. He is no more of a man of God than Osama bin Laden.

  • JusticeForMoody

    Rick S.

Are you Rick J. Bartlett? Who ever wrote this in response to “Holier Than Thou’s” statement must be Rick J. Bartlett himself writing in alias form. Who else would defend him like you just did in the statement above. Rick Bartlett even admitted to having the cat for three days to Animal Control & the police but then he changed his story a few times after that. Rick Barlett is a charlatan with blood on his hands. I don’t care what religion he preaches, he is animal abuser and probably will be the next serial killer we read about.

    Dear KW:

It sounds to me as if you are in love with Rick Bartlett. Many people fall in love with their preachers; idol or hero worship, etc. Many women follow their preachers around like fans do for rock stars.

However, look at the obvious facts, Rick and Tina Bartlett had the cat last. The Animal Patrol Officer saw Bartlett with Moody and saw Moody’s ID tag. Animal Patrol trusted Bartlett to return it to Moody’s rightful owners. They were snowed by Bartlett just like you were because he was a minister and sometime volunteer police chaplain. A pillar of the community, or so you, KW, and Animal Patrol thought. Con men can be very convincing.

The local Bastrop Pet Clinic tried to save Moody’s life. They examined Moody after his fall from the bridge and Moody was not bleeding from the outside (except Moody’s penis was severly injured; I don’t even want to go there with that.) Moody was not hit by a car; the cat had internal injuries and died from being pushed off a fifty-foot bridge by your good friend of twenty-years.

It is nice to be loyal to your friends, KW, but there is also a time to take off the rose colored glasses and look at the hard facts.

Moody was alive, Bartlett was the last one with Moody, now Moody is dead because cat’s “annoyed” Rick and he “felt flustered.” Also, Moody’s paw pads were torn from the torture and three day neglect inflicted by your good friend of twenty years.

Time to cut the umbilical with the Bartett’s and find a reputable preacher like Billy Graham to have dinners and socialize with in the future. You will never hear any scandals related to him.

And here is the clincher, the Sunday after Moody died, this is what Bartlett preached in his sermon to his congregation:
“Jesus said that the past should be left to bury its own dead and thus be finished with it,” Bartlett writes. “No post mortem’s wanted or allowed. They are bad psychology and rotten religion … rejoice in His promises of deliverance and renewal from wrongs suffered and caused.”

That’s quite the sermon to deliver following Moody’s murder. Bet that was a real comfort to the Bell Family and to half the congregation that own cats of their own.

JW, if the Bartlett’s are your best friends, time to check them off your Christmas card list and replace it with people that aren’t as concerned about the appearance of their yard and more concerned with what is in a person’s heart.

I say don’t just search Rick Bartlett’s closet. I think the city of Bastrop should dig up his front and back yard and look for skeletons or heavens knows what else they might discover.

If indeed the pastor is guilty as charged, it is my professional opinion as a pastor and previously a therapist and mental health director, that the trauma would likely extend even beyond Moody’s own family. It would likely be disillusioning to the faith of many within the congregation and community who look to the pastor not as a perfect person (we are sinners like anyone else), but at least as a loving and ethical person who is trying hard to emulate show the love of God in their daily walk. Hopefully the DA will (again if the pastor is indeed guilty) will take into account not only the trauma suffered by Moody’s owners, but also the impact on the church and community:  emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. It takes a long time to recover from something like this.

Also, is important to remember that Christ’s call to forgiveness and to pray for our enemies (as we should here)  DOES NOT mean that one should escape the natural consequences of their actions. For example, in the Bible, God forgave David because he repented, but he still experienced the natural consequences of his actions, which was the loss of his firstborn. So significant legal consequences ARE necessary and loving here if indeed the man is guilty as charged. This story has been traumatic for me even as a stranger 1000 miles away. We are cat lovers, and my heart goes out to the community, church, and especially Moody’s family. There are no words to capture how they must feel – my prayers are with all.

Hello KC Field:Thank you for writing back.  I appreciate your comments and you sound like a very logical, educated, rational, forgiving Christian man.  The death of Moody the Cat has made a national impact on the world  and has gone viral due to technology, social networks and through hundreds of tireless, passionate advocates against the cruelty to animals.  Rick’s cat tossing bridge news story has reached millions of people, thus far.  It has made Rick and Tina Bartlett ”household words.”  If Rick Bartlett wanted to be famous, why didn’t he chose the high road and write a brilliant sermon likes Martin Luther Kings’, “I Have A Dream.” Instead Pastor Bartlett chose to become famous by pulling a sophomoric act of throwing a defenseless middle aged cat over a fifty-foot bridge. Everyone gets their fifteen minutes of fame in this world; and we can all decide how we want to get ”our day in the sun.”  With Rick’s education, he had so many other avenues to become famous and beloved by all.  Rick Bartlett chose the lowest common denominator and worst possible avenue to achieve his new found notoriety.

My heart would break if I had to try to endure seeing that cat trap each day after suffering the loss of a beloved family member.  That neighbor only calls himself a Christian.  Please do not judge other Christians by his heinous act.

Get justice for this Moody, the beloved cat of a 5-year old girl. No child should have to lose their pet cat in a violent manner.
